Beginner’s Guide to Identifying When Your Ball Python is in Shed
Shedding is a natural process for ball pythons, where they replace old skin with new. As a beginner, it’s important to recognize the signs of shedding so you can provide the right care and environment. This guide will walk you through the shedding process, signs to look for, and how to support your snake during this time.
How Often Do Ball Pythons Shed?
• Young ball pythons (hatchlings & juveniles): Shed every 4-6 weeks due to rapid growth.
• Adults: Shed every 6-8 weeks, but it depends on their growth and health.
Signs Your Ball Python is About to Shed
Shedding happens in stages. Look for these signs:
1. Dull and Darker Skin
• The scales will lose their shine and appear faded or dull.
• Your ball python’s normal pattern may look muted or grayish.
2. Blue or Cloudy Eyes (“In Blue”)
• The eyes will turn a bluish-gray or milky color due to fluid buildup under the old skin.
• This can make your snake more defensive or less active since its vision is impaired.
3. Decreased Appetite
• Some ball pythons refuse food during shedding because they feel vulnerable.
• If your snake skips a meal, don’t worry—just wait until after the shed.
4. Increased Hiding & Less Activity
• Your snake may stay in its hide more often and avoid handling.
• They may seem sluggish or uninterested in exploring.
5. Dry, Wrinkled Skin Before Shedding
• As the shed gets closer, the skin may appear extra dry and wrinkly in some areas.
6. Rubbing Against Objects
• A day or two before shedding, your snake may rub its face on rough surfaces to loosen the old skin.
What to Do When Your Ball Python is in Shed
✅ Increase Humidity – Raise enclosure humidity to 70-80% to help loosen the old skin.
✅ Provide a Humid Hide – Add a hide with damp sphagnum moss or paper towels.
✅ Avoid Handling – Your snake may be grumpy or defensive due to poor vision.
✅ Offer Fresh Water – Hydration is key to a successful shed.
✅ Let the Process Happen Naturally – Shedding typically takes 7-10 days from the first signs to completion.
After the Shed
• Check if the shed came off in one piece (or mostly whole).
• Look for retained shed on the tail tip or eyes—these areas can have issues.
• If stuck shed remains, follow safe removal methods (like a humid hide or soak).
Recognizing the shedding cycle helps ensure your ball python stays healthy and comfortable. With proper humidity and care, shedding should be an easy, natural process for your snake.
