Beginner’s Guide to Stuck Shed in Ball Pythons
Shedding is a natural process for ball pythons, but sometimes they can experience stuck shed, where pieces of old skin do not come off completely. This guide will help you understand why it happens, how to safely assist your snake, and how to prevent it in the future.
Why Does Stuck Shed Happen?
Stuck shed (retained shed) is usually caused by:
✔ Low Humidity – Ideal humidity for a ball python should be 50-60% normally and 70-80% during shedding.
✔ Dehydration – Lack of proper hydration can make it difficult for the skin to separate.
✔ Lack of Proper Surfaces to Rub Against – If there are no rough surfaces in the enclosure, your snake may struggle to remove old skin.
✔ Illness or Stress – Parasites, respiratory infections, or stress can make shedding difficult.
How to Help a Ball Python with Stuck Shed
If your ball python has pieces of shed stuck, follow these steps:
1. Provide a Humid Hide
• Add a hide with damp sphagnum moss or paper towels to increase local humidity.
• Let your snake enter and loosen the skin naturally.
2. Increase Overall Humidity
• Mist the enclosure lightly with warm water.
• Use a larger water bowl to raise humidity.
• Ensure the enclosure has proper ventilation so it doesn’t become too damp.
3. Soak Your Snake (If Needed)
If the stuck shed does not come off naturally, a lukewarm soak can help:
• Fill a container with 1 inch of lukewarm water (just enough to cover the belly).
• Place a damp towel at the bottom for traction.
• Let your snake soak for 15-30 minutes under supervision.
• Gently rub the stuck shed with a soft, damp towel or your fingers (never force it off).
4. Use a Damp Cloth or Paper Towel
• If soaking isn’t an option, gently rub a damp cloth or paper towel over the affected area.
• This works well for small patches of stuck shed, like tail tips or eyecaps.
Special Case: Retained Eye Caps (Spectacles)
• Do not force off stuck eye caps—this can damage the eye.
• Try increasing humidity and using the soaking method.
• If eye caps remain after a few sheds, consult a reptile vet.
Preventing Future Shedding Issues
✅ Maintain proper humidity (50-60%, 70-80% when shedding).
✅ Provide a humid hide year-round.
✅ Ensure proper hydration—always have fresh, clean water available.
✅ Add rough surfaces like branches or textured hides to help with shedding.
✅ Monitor shedding cycles—a dull body and blue-ish eyes mean a shed is coming soon.
By following these steps, you can help your ball python have a smooth and healthy shedding process. If you ever notice repeated shedding issues or signs of illness, consult a reptile veterinarian for further assistance.
